Those who work in early childhood care and education are invited to attend roundtable sessions that address early intervention and challenging behaviors. The sessions are hosted by the Scott County Community Foundation’s Early Childhood Committee in partnership with Building Blocks.

The first session is “BYOB: Bring Your Own Binoculars…how to see and implement early intervention in the early childhood classroom.” Every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential. Research shows that the first five years of a child’s life are crucial for development, and early intervention can dramatically improve outcomes for children facing developmental challenges. By the end of the session, you will be able to identify early intervention, outline the tools needed to ensure you are equipped with the knowledge and resources for identifying developmental delays, identify the space between early identification and effective intervention, compare and contrast stories from the field to learn what is working, and demonstrate effective intervention techniques that can be implemented immediately. The session will be held Thursday, April 3 at 4:30 p.m. at the Lifelong Learning Center. It will be taught by Abbi Brooks, the Program Director for the Child Care Resource and Referral Network through Building Blocks.

The second session is “Responding to Children’s Challenging Behavior.” A significant portion of preschool-age children exhibit challenging behaviors that can lead to serious consequences. Preschoolers who are expelled from the classroom are 10 times more likely to drop out of high school, and later in life, are 10 times more likely to spend time in jail or prison. By the end of this session, you will be able to define challenging behavior and possible influences on behavior, understand and identify the four functions of behavior and demonstrate an understanding of the escalation/acting out cycle, and identify and apply strategies to address escalating student behaviors. The session will be held Thursday, April 24 at 4:30 p.m. at the Lifelong Learning Center. It will be taught by Jamie Like, a Behavior Trainer/Consultant for Building Blocks.

Refreshments will be served, and door prizes will be given. There is no cost to attend, but providers are asked to RSVP at 812-752-2057 or email info@scottcountyfoundation.org by Tuesday, April 1 for the first session, and Tuesday, April 22 for the second session, to ensure seat availability.
