Austin High School senior Trent Salyers received the 2016 Scott County Youth Grantmaking Council (?YGC?) Helping Hand Award. Trent was nominated for his passion about firefighting and keeping our community safe. Along with being an active member of the Jennings Township Volunteer Fire Department as a junior firefighter, he has raised money with the fire department each year for almost his entire life for Crusade For Children. He volunteers as a member of the Scott County Community Emergency Response Team and responds to emergencies at all hours of the day or night when he isn?t in school. He also educates 3rd grade students at Austin Elementary about fire safety each year. He received a certificate and $100 as a way to express appreciation for his volunteer efforts.
This is the third year the YGC has awarded the Helping Hand Award to honor youth who have set themselves apart from others by working to make Scott County a better place.
