Family: I am the daughter of Dean and Carol Stead. I married Matt Phillips of Indianapolis in 1989. He served as a pilot for the Air Force, which provided us the opportunity to live in Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, Kansas and Germany. We have two sons: a junior at Scottsburg High School, age 16; and an eighth grader at Scottsburg Middle School, age 13. I was happy for our family to return to my hometown Scottsburg upon Matt's military retirement in 2007.
Employment: As a 1984 Scottsburg High School graduate, I attended Indiana University and graduated in 1988 with a degree in Marketing and also in Management. I worked for May Department stores as a sales manager and then a human resources manager. I have run a successful home business, served as church pianist and also worked as a substitute teacher. I am currently employed by the Scott County Soil and Water Conservation District as the District Coordinator.
Activities/memberships/hobbies: I have served in various capacities in the communities where we were stationed during Matt's military career to include Mothers of Preschoolers Coordinator, multiple school advisory boards and church councils. Matt and I are members of the First Christian Church of Scottsburg. I enjoy playing the piano, gardening, paper crafts and reading. I also am a full-fledged soccer mom and spend many hours driving to and watching soccer.
Why did you join the board? It is an honor to have been asked to join the Scott County Community Foundation board. I see it as a great way to serve my hometown. I have great respect for the success the Foundation has achieved in financial stewardship as well as the good work that is occurring in Scott County.
What do you like about the Scott County Community Foundation? I believe that every single person can make a difference. It doesn't matter if you give $10 or $10,000. WHen everyone works together, great things can happen. I like the idea that the money we give in Scott County stays in Scott County helping our neighbors today, while at the same time building our community's future.
