Fifteen Scott County students and their families were invited to a dinner held March 20 at LJ’s Banquet Hall to recognize their hard work and achievements in school. The students represented the top five percent of their classes at Scottsburg High School and Austin High School. The guest speaker was Damon Bailey, a former Indiana University basketball player. He spoke on “The 3 D’s: Desire, Determination and Dedication.”
“In life, we’re going to face a lot of obstacles that we have to overcome,” said Bailey. “And I think we have to be very, very determined. I’m someone that believes that we, as people, can accomplish a lot of great things if we set our minds to it…you have to be very determined because there’s going to be a roadblock in every street that you go down in life. Some of those roadblocks are going to be large, and some are going to be small, but nothing’s going to come easy. You have to be very determined and never give up and keep pushing forward at whatever goals it is that you have.”
Damon autographed copies of his book, “Damon: Beyond the Glory” and took pictures with the students. The scholars were also awarded $100 grants to be used for their educational expenses at college, along with their college sweatshirt.
The students honored from Austin High School were Matt Bayes, Jeffrey Cummins, Brittany Sizemore, RaeAnn Wintin and Brooklyn Young. The students recognized from Scottsburg High School were Stephen Allen, Renee Bruck, Katelyn Densford, Cathleen Gross, Amy Haven, Natalie Reeves, Jennifer Sandlin, Kasey Spicer, Kasey Tobias and Sara Woolbright.
The scholar recognition dinner was provided through a Sustaining Resource Development grant from Lilly Endowment to the Scott County Community Foundation.
