Bonnie and Russ Comer sign the agreement establishing the Scott County 4-H Fund at the Scott County Community Foundation. The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships and awards for members of 4-H who are not participating in livestock events, and to provide support to youth leadership activities.
Russ was a 10-year member 4-H member with the old 4-F 4-H Club. During that time he was involved with many 4-H projects, Junior Leaders, club offices, and the 4-H leadership camp at Purdue University.
“Several of what 4-H offered to me has helped with my career choices and my college career,” said Russ.
Bonnie took the opportunity to become involved with 4-H when her children became active. Since then she has helped with many projects and the local fair.
“We feel that 4-H can teach our youth the valuable lessons they need to enhance what our school systems are trying to accomplish and also give our youth a chance to explore many career opportunities,” said Russ and Bonnie. “However, 4-H needs new ways to fund their activities and we feel that this endowment will provide one more way to accomplish this. This endowment is set up to assist with non-livestock projects, camp activities and 4-H sponsored trips. We feel that in the past a lot of local emphasis has been placed on the livestock projects that 4-H provides. While these are very important and successful, there are other youth that do not have the opportunity or desire to take this type of project, and these youth need to have the means to enhance their interests as well.”
“Hopefully others in the community will have the desire and ability to contribute to this endowment through private donations or through United Way,” said the Comers.
